Sculpt Your Own President this President’s Day

Spend this President’s Day, Monday, Feb. 15, learning about the presidential statues that can be found on the sidewalks of downtown Rapid City. The Rapid City Public Library is hosting a City of Presidents No School Discovery Day in celebration of the holiday.

Dallerie Davis, co-founder of The City of Presidents, will talk about the presidential statue project. Artist James Van Nuys will show a video of how he created the statue of President Millard Fillmore. He will then work with children to mold their own statues out of clay. This program takes place at 9:30 a.m. at the Downtown Library and at 1:00 p.m. at the North Library. All ages are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Stock Quotes and Antique Prices at the Rapid City Library

The Rapid City Public Library is happy to announce that we are unveiling two amazing new research tools to our patrons for the New Year–Value Line and Price It.

Value Line provides investors with the most accurate and independently created research information available. It is an objective and unbiased research company that collects data and analyzes performance of approximately 8,000 stocks, 15,000 mutual funds, 80,000 options as well as other securities. Value Line also teaches new investors how to use the tools it provides effectively in order to meet their financial objectives.

With Price It! Antiques and Collectibles offered by Gale Databases and now accessible through the Rapid City Public Library, I can use the ‘value maximizer’ to determine the worth of my attic full of stuff. I can get an averaged quote of my collectibles worth through Price It’s ability to average data from its own database as well as eBay and dozens of land-based auction houses. The database currently has over 23 million prices realized for art, antiques and collectibles in more than 100 categories and subcategories with over 10 million images.

Library Hits Stellar Milestone of 1 Million Circulations in 2009

The Rapid City Public Library hit a milestone of 1 million circulations in 2009. That figure represents use of 1 million books, online databases, AV materials and information link hits. Whether patrons walk through the front doors or reach us by phone, instant message or tweet, the Rapid City Public Library connects and guides them through the wide variety of information available online and in print.

This growing trend helps to realize the library’s goal of being an online as well as physical resource to the community, stated Library Director Greta Chapman, as well as focusing on new and emerging technologies to help patrons with their information needs.

The Rapid City Public Library is not alone in this trend. Libraries all over the nation are plugging into new ways of engaging with patrons and offering services. For many library users the library is virtual and they may engage with the library exclusively via online services. The library provides them access to reliable and authentic information in an online world full of unknowns. Librarians also help them unravel a tangle of websites to find information that is useful and reliable.

Special Gift for the New Year: Long Time Volunteer Bequeaths $400,000 to Library Foundation

The new year will start with some good news for the Rapid City Library Foundation: Their endowment goal has nearly been achieved with one check.

Former Rapid City resident Virginia F. Holtry, who died in February at the age of 84, left a bequest of $400,000 to the Rapid City Library Foundation. Holtry had formerly served as a volunteer at the library for several years.

With a single donation, this bequest will further the Foundation’s mission of: 1. Improving access to information for all citizens in the community, 2. Enabling the library to continue to serve as a center of learning, research and entertainment, and 3. Expanding library services to the community by engaging with other service organizations and utilizing new technologies.

Holtry moved to Rapid City after the death of her husband in 1984. With her experience as an architecture student at University of Michigan as well as a small business owner, Virginia brought an ample amount of knowledge and excitement to her role as a library volunteer. As a dedicated volunteer, Holtry was willing to do whatever was needed to ensure that patrons had their information needs met.
