Re:       Reference Services Departmental Development

Summary: A number of efforts have been put into place in order to ensure the foundations of a successful team are present during the Reference Services department’s transition.  These efforts include the implementation of self scheduling, the development of project teams, and a team foundations meeting.

Self-Scheduling: Under the framework and guidelines developed by the Reference Services Librarian I, staff has taken the lead in determining daily coverage for service points.  This transition has resulted in staff enhancing their teamwork skills and developing a better understanding of their role in the department’s service goals.

Project Teams: Small teams of staff members have been assigned to the various ongoing projects taking place in the Reference Services department.  These teams of 3-5 staff members take the lead in developing and completing the project.  The teams will work with the Reference Services Librarian I and provide progress reports to the department on a regular basis.  This transition promises for more focused work and a higher level of accountability amongst staff.

Team Foundations Meeting: The Reference Services department met on May 8 to discuss the foundations necessary for building an effective team.  Consultant Ginny Nelson facilitated the session.  Outcomes of the session include a common understanding of the ground rules, communication criteria and expectations that each team member must adhere to in order to positively contribute to the department.
