DIRECTOR’S REPORT:  JUNE  2006

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

ADMINISTRATION

Community, Governmental and Interlibrary Relations:  G. Chapman facilitated a meeting at Rapid City Public Library with Department Heads about marketing and public awareness strategies for city information, participated in two meetings to discuss the capital campaign and library support for the Foundation, attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for General Beadle School Community Center, attended an SDLA procedures update meeting in Mitchell with the SDLA President and Past President to prepare for the SDLA Board meeting on June 9, and participated in Council update meetings with School Board members about combined school projects with review of the School Community Center.

Building & Grounds: Snow and ice falling from the rounded roof down to the statue area is being addressed with a new “bar” system to replace the previous “cone” system of roof ice breaks; cost estimates are being obtained for safety improvements. Two Freon compressors in the new outside chiller unit quit working. Compressors are under 5 year warranty (parts only); work is completed.

Public Information and Programming:  Travis Brink is continuing to fill the Publications vacancy.  The interview process has begun and this position should be filled soon.  This month’s publications:

  • Hundreds of flyers, maps, reading logs and large posters for the Summer Reading Program for children and adults
  • Polling location/Election signage for display unit and building
  • Access card signage for patrons
  • 25 packets of promotional material for the City’s New Employee Orientation session

Training:

·         On May 2 Linda Rogers presented information to staff on Captivate, software used to create online tutorials

·         Staff members received a review of the selection data entry process for collection additions

·         On May 25 all staff members attended a session on “Stress Management,” presented by Terri Rostad, RN, an instructor at WDTI.

·         Circulation staff did a training update for Reference staff on the Youth Without Parent card registration procedure.

PUBLIC SERVICES/YOUTH

Programs:

Public Services staff visited 18 public and private Rapid City elementary schools to promote the Summer Reading Program.  Linda Rogers, Leah Diggins and Leanna Martinez gave 35 presentations during the first three weeks in May.

Services:

Youth Services staff hosted four school groups for library tours in May.  A total of 159 students visited the library as a result of these tours.

PUBLIC SERVICES/ADULT SERVICES-REFERENCE

Collections:

Work is being done to relocate the South Dakota collection for the coffee shop opening.  Staff has reviewed South Dakota materials to determine which items can circulate in the main collection, which items should be located in the Reference collection and which fragile and irreplaceable items should be housed in a locked case.

·         Training sessions are planned to inform all staff on the various South Dakota resources and their new locations

SUPPORT SERVICES/CIRCULATION

  • Circulation staff organized and obtained prizes for the adult summer reading program.
  • Circulation assisted Reference services by processing children’s library card registrations for several school tours.

OUTREACH:

  • We delivered to 66 of 100 active patrons this month. We have had a 7% increase in patrons so far this year.
  • Thirty-four volunteers gave 351 hours in May, or about 10 hours per volunteer.

SUPPORT SERVICES/NETWORK SERVICES

Services:

  • Re-organized the folder structure of the website, and cleaned up unused web pages.
  • Installed new network switch to help the internal network traffic flow
  • Purchased a light source to aid in the video recording of the Oral History project
  • Taught the 5th Dreamweaver class. (Topics – Flash, fireworks, and Cascading Style Sheets)

SUPPORT SERVICES/TECHNICAL SERVICES

Services:

  • We collected some useful information on magazines that are being well used by patrons as well as which new magazine titles patrons would like. We will use that information to select new magazine titles and to discontinue subscription to little-used magazines
  • In preparation for a presentation at SDLA in the fall, Ed practiced by presenting the information to his Toastmaster group. The presentation documents RCPL’s history of creating significant efficiencies in its technical services operations. The presentation at Toastmasters was well received and, because many of the other members of the Toastmaster group are City employees or community business leaders, it was good public relations for the library.
  • Theresa trained both Barb and Rhonda on simple AV cataloging
  • Ed and Jennifer created groundwork for the planned Circulation – Technical Services merger.
