Where in the world can you find a water party where you won’t get wet? The Rapid City Public Library is having their summer reading kick off celebration on June 5 and the theme is Make a Splash – Read! this year so the activities are related to water in some way.

The event will take place at 10:30 a.m. downtown and 2 p.m. at the north location at General Beadle.

You will find craft stations, balloon animals, a candy sushi bar, a fishing booth for prizes, face painting and a visit from Froggy, the character from the books written by Jonathan London.

This will be the first day to start reading and anyone who reads or is read to for 15 minutes a day can color a water drop in on the log. After 25 days they can come into either library and collect a prize.  There will also be prizes at the 50 and 75 day mark and those who finish the 75 days of reading will be entered into a drawing for larger prizes.

The end of the summer reading celebration will take place on Saturday, August 21. Logs can be turned in until August 31.

Teens can read three books and enter a book review, a poem or a drawing for each book they read. Participants are encouraged to submit entries through Facebook, but a paper form will also be available at either library or online. If you turn in three entries, you will be entered in a drawing for a $50 Borders gift card, $50 Best Buy gift card and an MP3 player.

Adults who read a book and post a short review on the library’s Facebook page will be entered into a drawing for a basket full of prizes.

Family Adventure is back this year so come in and pick up a booklet and enjoy a quest to find the answers. Return it to receive a prize and be entered into a drawing for bigger prizes.

Four different performances are planned this summer starting off on Friday, June 18 with the Butterfly Puppet Theatre presentation of the puppet show, “Alice in Waterland,” written and performed by Leonard Running and Sue Hey.

Stories of the sea with storyteller Indiana Bones and his pet dragon, Draco, will take place on Thursday, July 8. Also in July, Mr. Twister, will be here Monday, July 19 to do magic, juggling and balloon twisting.

Puppeteer Markie Scholz will perform her original show, “Great Water Rescue II,” on Monday, August 9.

Summer story times will all be held at 9:30 a.m. The downtown schedule includes Book Buddies for preschoolers every Tuesday and a Baby Bookworms every Thursday. General Beadle will have a story time every Wednesday starting on June 9.

Family Story times will continue to be held at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month downtown and the third Tuesday of the month at General Beadle.
