Catch The Reading Bug @ Rapid City Public LibraryBy Leanna Martinez, Library AssociateHeeere comes SUMMER! Let’s count the ways we love those summer days: ball games, reading, swimming, reading, biking, reading, picnics, reading, soccer and READING! Are you catching the hint about reading? The Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, ‘Catch the Reading Bug’, is set to begin Tuesday May 27. Kids from birth to age 18 read and keep track of each day they read (or are read to) throughout the summer. Reading logs will be available starting May 27 for tracking your reading; pick up a copy at RCPL Downtown, RCPL North (at the General Beadle School), or download from our website, www.rapidcitylibrary.org. Turn in your completed reading logs for a variety of prizes. Keeping track of your reading isn’t all there is to do! There are lots of fun programs and events at the library all summer long. Mark you calendar for: Wednesday, June 4 – KICK OFF DAY, from 10 – 11:30 at RCPL Downtown, and 1:30-3:00 at RCPL North. Bring your camera for a photo with the loveable ‘Frog and Toad’; follow the Bug Zone Map to see Exotic Bugs from Reptile Gardens; learn about bees and receive a honey snack from a local beekeeper; learn about bugs native to South Dakota from a US Forest Service entomologist; make a bug craft; and make and eat a ‘bug’ snack. Monday, June 16 – FINGER PAINT BUGS with Lori Harrington, 10:00 Downtown, and 1:30 at North. Monday, July 7 – BALLOON BUGS with Bob the Twister Guy with his amazing friend Super Flea the daredevil insect, 10:30 Downtown, and 1:30 at North. Wednesday, August 6 – ANIMAL ARCHITECTS exhibit and craft: 10:00 Downtown, and 1:30 at North. Explore the interactive Animal Architects exhibit from the HOP (Hands On Partnership) of Literature, Science and Art in South Dakota. The exhibit will be on display during August. Sunday, August 24 – 90 day CELEBRATION of Summer Reading with cool treats, crafts, and activities at both libraries; times to be announced. If you’re bugged about gas prices, show your RCPL library card to a Rapid Ride bus driver, and you can ride free to either of the RCPL libraries to enjoy all these activities, plus:
And there’s still MORE to do, because summertime reading is NOT just for kids! Back by popular demand, the QUICK-PIC PICNIC for adults will be held at noon on June 18, July 16, and August 20, at RCPL Downtown. Enjoy a lunch (without the ants!) sponsored by the Friends of the Library; register your place by calling 394-4171. While you enjoy lunch, you can participate in a discussion of the books you’re listening to or reading, hear about what others are reading, and take this opportunity to add new titles to your ‘must read’ list. After the lunches, or any time throughout the summer, be sure to visit the Black Hills Foam Work bug display in the library stairwell. Get a sneak peek of the bugs at www.blackhillsfoamwork.com. And finally, here’s a little ‘buggy’ information to impress your friends and co-workers: t here are more than 1,000,000 known species of insects, more than all other types of animals combined ( www.wikipedia.org ); insects outnumber humans by around 1.6 billion to 1 ( www.entsoc.org ); insects are stronger than humans - the average man can pull around 80 percent of his body weight, but some insects such as beetles and ants can pull 50 times their body weight ( www.uky.edu/Ag/Entomology/ythfacts/bugfun/trivia.htm ) Visit the library’s website at www.rapidcitylibrary.org , or call 394-4171 or 716-4098 for all the details about how you can Catch the Reading Bug this summer! |
