Frequently Asked Questions

Hours?

Monday-Thursday, 9:00 am-8:00 pm; Friday and Saturday, 9:00 am-6:00 pm; Sundays Noon - 6:00pm.

Public fax machine?

Currently we do not have a public fax machine. However, there are businesses close by that offer this service. Ask at the reference desk for a list of those businesses.

Phone books?

We have in-state phone books. We utilize web sites ( examples include switchboard.com or qwestdex.com ) to search for out-of-state phone numbers and addresses.

Word Processing?

We offer a self paced Microsoft Word tutorial for those who are making the transition from typewriters to computers.

Internet Access?

We have Internet access computers that can be used for up to one hour a day. We also have email computers that can be used for up to 30 minutes. The computers on the main floor are for research purposes. Youth Services has computers for research as well as educational games. Stop by the reference desk to register your library card for Internet use.

Wireless Internet?

We have wireless access for our patrons who have a laptop equipped with a wireless card.

Pay phone?

Our pay phone is located in the lobby of the main entrance to our facility. Calls are $.50 apiece.

Copier?

We have two public copiers. One is next to the Reference desk on the first floor, the other one on the 2nd floor in Youth Services. Copies cost .15 cents per copy.

Proctoring?

The Reference staff will be glad to proctor your exams for you. Call 394-6139 x501 to set up a proctor, exam times and rooms.

Bus stop?

A Rapid Ride bus stop is located on 7th St. between the Library and the Dahl Fine Arts Center. Ask for Route 3 to get to the library.

Scanner for public use?

Currently we do not have a public use scanner.

Computer discs or CD's?

Computer discs and CD's may be purchased from our vending machine upstairs for $1.00 each.

Book club?

We support book clubs by providing Books to Go. This service includes a book bag with 6 books of one title plus a guide to help your book group have an enjoyable reading experience.

IRS forms?

Go to www.irs.gov for tax forms and publications. The Federal Building located at 515 Ninth Street (between Main and St. Joseph) also has tax forms and publications.

Printing Capability?

The library offers the Go Print service which allows patrons to print pages at the cost of $.15 per page.

Burn CD's?

The majority of our patron access computers have the ability to burn CD's. Stop at the Reference Desk for instructions.

Picture book bins?

The bins are organized alphabetically by the first letter of an author's last name. There is one exception though. The very first bin houses popular titles which are a part of a larger series. Examples of these would include the Clifford, Curious George, Arthur, and the Berenstain Bears books.

Birds?

The birds in the aviary are leased to us from an organization called Living Design, INC., which is based out of Worthing, South Dakota. The Rapid City Public Library's facilities operators take part in the day to day care of the birds while Living Design, INC. checks the birds quarterly.

Do you have filters on the children's computers?

With the Supreme Court Ruling of the Children's Internet Protection Act, filtering software has been placed on the youth department computers.

The youth services department offers a variety of story times. Please contact our Youth Services department for dates and times.

Parking?


2 hour metered parking Monday through Saturday.

All but the current month's issue may be checked out.

Newsletter?


Published once a month. You may subscribe online for email or snail mail delivery.

Age to get a library card?


16, under 16 needs a parent signature.
