Library Board Trustee Vacancy – City Representative

Application Deadline – November 12, 2010 at 4 p.m.

Thank you for your interest in applying to be a City Library Trustee. Applications are currently being accepted for two vacancies of three year terms on the Board.

There are seven members appointed to the Board. Six members, including a City Council representative, are appointed by the Mayor. An advisory County Representative is appointed by the County Commissioners. The Board is governed by South Dakota Statutes. Those statutes have been included in your packet.

The average time commitment on the Board usually consists four to five hours per month including periodic promotional and training sessions. Elected officers of the Board have a greater amount of time per month depending upon activities of the library.

Requirements for a Library Trustee include regular attendance at monthly Board meetings and at scheduled committee meetings. This is a policy setting Board; members keep informed of library policies and adopt necessary changes. Board members also should be willing to periodically attend Library and Foundation events and public awareness presentations.

We look forward to receiving your application. The documents included with this memo are background resources. If you should have questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Library Director, Library Trustees and/or the Mayor’s Office.

In addition, interested candidates are also encouraged to schedule an orientation meeting with the Library Director. This meeting would be for the purpose of discussing the Board’s work and a tour of the facility. Please contact the Library Business Office at 394-4171 to schedule a meeting, estimated for approximately 30 – 45 minutes.

Please return the attached application form to the Library Business Office.  Candidates will be interviewed by the Mayor and Board Members at the September Board meeting. If you are not contacted for an interview at this time, you will be notified that your application will be kept on file. You are encouraged to apply, regardless of the number of applicants, as the Board profile is an evolving and changing dynamic of needs and goals.
