Re:         Subscription agreements for RFID

Recommendation
:  Approve acceptance of the subscription agreements with 3M and MK Sorting Solutions for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) products.  The total startup costs are $79,145, which are budgeted in the 2010 library budgets.  The Board approved an estimated cost of $79,075 at the December meeting for this equipment. Ongoing costs were projected for inclusion in the existing costs for the current use of magnetic security tags.

Background:  These contracts were reviewed and approved by both the City Attorney and the library’s ILS consultant. The RFID will allow for automation of inventory control and materials tracking instead of individual handling of each item by staff.  Staff resources will be reallocated for ongoing increased need to public use in-house and virtual services.  Implementation of the RFID would take place with the new ILS beginning in the spring.
