DIRECTOR’S REPORT

February 2010

Community, Governmental and Interlibrary Relations:

G. Chapman attended along with staff members the South Dakota Library Association Legislative Day at the State Library. A number of the Rapid City area legislators attended. Two new Library Associates have joined the staff to fill vacancies; one in Public Services and one in Circulation/Technical Services.  One of the new Librarian Associates was formerly a temporary employee at RCPL who left to receive her Masters in Library Science, and is now returning to RCPL. Library staff participated with Forefront Design in library consultant interviews for determination upon contract negotiation. G. Chapman attended SD Municipal League Legislative Day in Pierre, Feb. 2nd and 3rd.

Staff Training and Development:

The Strategic Plan’s customer relations workgroup identified that one way to enhance customer service is by keeping up with consumer trends.  Some resources employed to do that include Trendwatching and the Handheld Online Conference.

Featured Services and Enhancements:

RCPL began providing patron notices with the auto-dialer system.  This service provides information about holds or overdue items to patrons more quickly than with mailed notices and also reduces postage costs.  Notices are also provided via e-mail, with mailed notices sent only in the event that a patron does not have either an answering machine or an e-mail account.
