DIRECTOR’S REPORT:  JANUARY 2008

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

 

ADMINISTRATION

Community, Governmental and Interlibrary Relations: G. Chapman attended the SD State Library Board meeting to meet the new State Library Director Dan Siebersma and a public forum discussion with Otto Doll SD Chief Information Officer regarding State Library database purchases, continued attendance at the weekly city information technology meetings for the transition of centralization of staffing but decentralized with assignments to existing departments, participation and information distribution regarding the contract agreement for county library services provided by RCPL, 

 

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS

Projects for 2008:

  • New library sign placed at the corner of 7th Street and Quincy Street;
  • New paint scheme to correspond with space use project;
  • Two additional security cameras to cover alley and Quincy Street (along front of library)
  • Phase two damper project, replace old leaking dampers in Air Handler II to match new low leak dampers in Air handler 1.
  • New front entrance doors, the existing doors are the original doors over 35 years old, the current doors need adjusted on a regular basis and are nearing the end of the life span. Also, new doors will allow for larger displays and equipment to enter the building. Larger equipment is necessary for changing high ceiling lights and other maintenance and cleaning issues.

   

Public Information and Programming:

Susan Braunstein will give a brief overview of programming plans for 2008.

 

PUBLIC SERVICES

·        104 people attended the weekly story times during the month of December.

·        The December Lunch and Learn was well attended with 42 people. They learned how to create a holiday ornament.

·        Susan Braunstein and Marjorie Brekke gave a tour and library resource review to 72 students from St. Elizabeth Seaton School.

·        Jason Walker and Linda Rogers gave a tour and story time to 20 Boy Scouts.

·        Susan Braunstein and Marjorie Brekke worked at the library booth at the City Employee Benefits Fair. They spoke to approximately 100 people about the library’s services and signed up 17 library cards.

·        Jason Walker and Travis Brink traveled to North Middle School and presented information on the library’s digital resources to 120 students.

 

 

CIRCULATION-TECHNICAL SERVICES

·        A withdrawing team of Michelle, Amylee, Toni, Lisha, Ailsa, and Carla withdrew an impressive 1,479 items on December 14.

·        A cataloging team of Barb, Rhonda, Kim, and Nancy cataloged an impressive 442 items on December 13.

·        Staff and volunteers worked on changing the CD Readalong bags to books with CD envelopes to improve shelving and use on the self-check machines.

·        Materials have been selected and catalogued for transition to General Beadle location.

·        A new material selection process involving more timesaving automated systems, pre-processing and standing orders is lined up to begin in 2008.

·        The library’s downloadable audiobook service is gaining in popularity, having been featured in print and televised media, generating additional interest.

 

 

NETWORK SERVICES

  • Setup staff computer at General Beadle for access to our library program.
  • Greg Russ assigned the duty of researching the uses for sharepoint services by Jim Cook.
  • Greg Russ assigned the duty of technology training coordinator by Jim Cook.
