The 2006 Summer Reading Program kicked off with an “Animal Safari” event complete with dancing dogs, talking birds, “Froggy” book character, and much more.  Programs throughout the summer were well attended, with a grand finale for 90-day readers at the Elks Theater.  Participants for the 90 day event were treated to a special showing of the movie Hoot and a visit from a real live owl from Wildlife Experiences.

The 2006 program saw slightly less participation from 2005.  One positive trend was that although fewer youth started the program this year, more participants continued reading throughout the summer.  The Rapid City Public Library continued its partnership with Story Book Island, providing weekly outreach story times during July and August.  The library also partnered with the Dahl Fine Arts Center to plan a 30-day reading event.
