DIRECTOR’S REPORT:  MAY  2006

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

 

ADMINISTRATION

 

Community, Governmental and Interlibrary Relations:  G. Chapman attended the Public Safety Ribbon Cutting for the new building, participated in the annual Foundation Fundraiser Dinner debriefing, facilitated the monthly SDLA Annual Conference Planning meeting as Co-Chair with T. Davis, team member of the SDLA Spring Forum West River and attended the Smart Growth Seminar sponsored by the City.

 

Building & Grounds:  Snow and ice falling from the rounded roof down to the statue area is being addressed with a new “bar” system to replace the previous “cone” system of roof ice breaks; cost estimates are being obtained for safety improvements. Mike Coonce, the new part-time custodial maintenance person, has been on board since April 17, and is doing well in all aspects of the job.

 

Public Information and Programming:  Travis Brink is continuing to fill the Publications vacancy.  This month he created: a number of flyers and Read posters for National Library Week and Space Use project brochures and display unit for the Foundation’s annual dinner.  Additionally, Travis created programs, flyers and Read posters for the SDLA Spring Forum event hosted by RCPL. 

 

Training:  Reports from G. Chapman and T. Davis are attached from their attendance at the Public Library Association Conference in Boston, MA. G. Chapman also attended an online conference about future trends in libraries sponsored by the American College Research Libraries/Coalition for Networked Information/ /EDUCAUSE Joint Virtual Conference “Innovate and Motivate: Next Generation Libraries” April 20-21, 2006.

 

All staff members attended a required city-wide session on “Sexual Harassment, Discrimination and Workplace Violence.”  The sessions were held in March and April. Jim Soehle, RCPL Network Services, presented a basic computer troubleshooting session to staff members on April 11 and again on April 13. April’s staff information session was on registering new patrons and was presented by Lisha Sheldon, from the Circulation department. An annual tornado drill and a refresher session on power outage procedures was held April 26.

 

PUBLIC SERVICES/YOUTH

 

Programs:  Teen Open Mic continues to be successful with 45 singing, poetry producing young adults sharing their artistic talents.  After-School Discovery Days is also a popular event; this month we hosted a two day video game tournament. 

 

Services: We conducted four tours with a total of 80 patrons. 

 

PUBLIC SERVICES/ADULT SERVICES-REFERENCE

 

Programs:  Oral history conducted an interview with a 104 year old woman, who is a long-time resident of the area. There has been a renewed focus after a meeting with Linn Productions that gave direction on equipment and lighting challenges.  

 

Services:  Volksmarch celebrated their partnership with the Library by holding a walking tour on April 29 which included 66 participants that started and ended at the Library.  They also had their Annual Meeting here.  There were 72 participants in all for the month of April.

 

SUPPORT SERVICES/CIRCULATION

  • Circulation completed their discussion on teamwork and our revised service guidelines at this month’s department meeting.
  • New procedures were developed to provide better ILL service to other libraries and better utilize our volunteers.
  • Our daily scheduling tool was updated to help manage work routines and daily tasks.
  • Three Circulation staff as well as staff from Reference visited coffee shops on April 18, in order to make a recommendation for a coffee concessionaire.
  • Selection and collection development information and procedures were updated.

 

OUTREACH: 

  • The volunteer recognition breakfast was held on April 25, and was attended by volunteers, staff, and Board members.

 

SUPPORT SERVICES/NETWORK SERVICES

  • Implementation of the staff wireless network – This is a secure wireless network for staff to have wireless access to the servers
  • Re-organization of web site folders – NS is reorganizing the folder structure that resides on the servers for better folder organization.
  • Reviewing 3com and HP managed switches for use within the library
  • Implementation of secondary network box on the main library floor. This installation will help facilitate the staff wireless as well as the pending space use plan.

 

SUPPORT SERVICES/TECHNICAL SERVICES

 

Services: 

  • TS and Business Office staff addressed many of the clerical and last-minute tasks for hosting the SDLA Spring Forum. Because of their efforts, the event proceeded smoothly
  • We developed a small backlog of uncataloged material this month. We implemented our backlog plan, and have begun to reduce the backlog and move the materials to the public.
  • We did some additional cross-training in ordering and magazine check-in within the department to achieve a broader base for back-up when someone is gone
  • In the process of assessing Librarian 1 tasks, we noted that a few of them are clerical in nature. We reassigned these clerical tasks, such as statistics gathering and statistics reporting for department and projects, to the Library Associate position
