Re: Strategic Plan Goals and Organizational Restructuring
Due to the current vacancy of the Reference Department Librarian I and the Publications/Youth Services Library Associate, as a matter of routine we re-examine the organizational structure for efficiency and effectiveness in meeting the strategic goals. There are several tasks that are important to the library and need a management level focus. The areas that need greater attention are:
We have concluded a consolidation of the Reference and Youth Services departments would be efficient for purposes of training and scheduling, along with coordination of programming, reference interviewing, research and homework support.
The two vacancies would become a management level focus in the positions of an Information Access (IA) Supervisor and Librarian I to address the needs we have outlined above. The will be no additional financial impacts for this change.
The IA Supervisor would be the supervisor of marketing, publications and public awareness contacts; they would also manage the overall collection development in particular to the emerging use of online information with balancing the resources and use of traditional print materials. The IA Librarian I would be in charge of all library publications as well as creating the library’s web content and designing an accessible site that allows patrons to effectively use our online resources. Both the IA Supervisor and IA Librarian I would work with community organizations on outreach and partnership opportunities including funding opportunities.
These positions are at the supervisory level in order to facilitate decision-making on collection development and online resource management throughout the organization. Because collection development is critical to a library’s success, many other libraries have this position at a supervisory level. The Supervisor will also be a point of contact for public information to media, public, and community organizations and so will need to be at the level where the information is generated.
