BOARD OF TRUSTEES
ADMINISTRATION
G. Chapman participated in a conference call with the
consultant hired by the State Library reviewing overall state needs for library
services, completed documents for the upcoming SDLA Board meeting http://www.rapidcitylibrary.org/sdla/01.18.06/sdla_links.01.18.06.htm,
participated in planning session for RCPL Management Competencies, set up
meeting for budget review cycles at RCPL and participated in Department Head
discussion for city wide budget cycles.
Community, Governmental and Interlibrary Relations:
Meetings
scheduled for County Library Service Contract negotiations with
Building & Grounds: A new motor & electronic driver for the main air handler
was installed. The existing driver was starting to go bad and needed replaced
to match first driver that was installed last year to run in-sync. Phase two
carpet replacement for Tech Services is scheduled for mid Feb; Carpet for adult
reading area will be forthcoming to coincide with the space use plan in March
or April.
Public Information and Programming:

Signage and Displays – for holiday closings, computer
classes, and programming. Arranged for
replacement of front door hours sign.

Web site – web pages for month’s programming
Training:
·
Ed has lined up several outside speakers for the SDLA
Spring Forum which will again be hosted by Rapid City Public Library
·
Eight RCPL staff members participated in the American
Heart Association Heartsaver Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training
through the city sponsored program.
·
All staff members received information on winter
weather survival and the emergency closing procedure for the library.
Programs: Youth Services storytimes continue to be popular with an average
attendance of 30 patrons per session. We
partnered with the YMCA After School Program to conduct a scavenger hunt of
library resources. Eighteen youth
attended our Discovery Days (no school) programs.
Services:

The
Author! Author! Series had 22 attendees for the talk by Dr. David Strand.
·
Reference
has taken over stocking the friends books sale; sales of books continue to be
strong, with between $400 and $800 received per month
·
Reference
proctored 13 tests
·
Two
successful walk-in computer classes were offered in December; these classes are
offered to anyone in the library interested in learning, no registration is
required.
·
We
have hired a new page, Josey Polenz.
·
Keith
L’Esperance, the city’s Risk Manager, inspected our workflow and found that it
met ergonomic requirements.
·
The
software for our self-check machines has been updated to improve efficiency.
·
New
audio-visual shelves have replaced our old, worn shelves.
OUTREACH:
35 volunteers reported 267 hours in December. 48 deliveries
were made to homebound patrons and eldercare facilities. Staff and volunteers
are being trained to use a more-user friendly data entry system.
Services:

Creating a new look for the RCPL web site pages

Working on the SDLA conference
website

Evaluating blog software to see which one will work
best for the needs of RCPL
·
Updating Network Services procedures
Services:
·
We have significantly decreased our backlog of
materials and, in doing so, discovered additional efficiencies in cataloging.
Consequently, the productivity of the catalogers has increased.
·
Chris created a link between two of our vendors’ pages
and our public catalog. Staff who select new materials will be able to tell
whether materials are already owned by the Library.
