Rapid City Public Library Strategic Plan

Goals are listed in chronological order according to objectives for the year of completion. Blue font is current status.

 

2005 Goals Status:

Create quiet zones for research and study;

§         Recommend Funding Sources for project

§         Space Use Consultant Hired

§         Fundraising Campaign and City Budget Support

§         Implementation of project 

Increase self-service and self check-in of materials

§         Fines payment

Research library services offering credit card

·         Request Finance Dept. to setup online payment option

§         Card registration – research library services for online transactions from start to finish for library card registration

·         Patrons can obtain a library card through online services using Ask a Librarian

 

Preserve historical documents such as local newspapers or out of print documents in electronic form;

§         Initiate task force in collaboration with State Library and other libraries for a statewide newspaper database to share costs and access

§         2006 Legislative funding request proposed and failed in session. Item will be reviewed for 2007 SDLA Legislative Platform

Provide library materials in popular formats (DVDs, computer resources, etc.);

§         Assessment and evaluation of collection according to policy using new integrated library system – 2005 – integrate new ILS assessment capabilities

§         Not completed. Collection Assessment staff training planed with Collection Management Consultant Mary Bushing June 2006

 

Provide mobile coffee shop services;

§         Develop a pilot project - 2005 – RFP submitted. No applicants applied. Review strategy to acquire services.

Offer Spanish and Lakota language instruction for staff;

§         Spanish - Maintain a staff resource.  Provide staff training on cultural awareness of Hispanic culture - 2005 Completed.

Provide comfortable furnishings that encourage relaxation and quiet recreational reading;

§         Online Video Oral Histories procedures, staff support and interviews are developed. Two interviews are available on the library website.

 

Develop a central point of access for city historical archives by working with other community agencies;

Work with other agencies to teach patrons of all ages how to find resources to improve their education and job skills.

§    Foster key contacts with agencies to develop information literacy presentations

§         education community – 2005 – presentations given for teach in-service, team teaching of information literacy class for college credit with school system, submission of federal grant September 2005, coordination with annual training for teachers within the school district

Easier system for patrons to request books and movies

§         Researching RSS (Really Simple Syndication XML code) that allows the sharing of information in a distributed manner using a database approach

§         Implemented RSS Feed on Library Website

Implementation and research of new integrated library system for self-service applications.

§   Aleph migration and integration of self service machines completed.

Increase the number of patron computer workstations in the Youth and Reference areas in 2005;

§    2005 Budget – Completed

§         Achieve a total of 120 patrons enrolled in homebound service – 2005 – Completed
