Recommendation: Approve the draft policy for Closed
Days 2007; this policy has no budgetary impact and includes holidays
designated by the union contract.
Background: Typically the Board has approved updates to this policy in November or December of each year.
Although the library is now open on Sundays year-round, we recommend retaining the 3-day weekends for Memorial Day and Labor Day for 2007. Based on a number of questions regarding work week schedules, we have initiated conversation with an outside party to review scheduling. Upon completion of that review, a determination will be made whether to recommend retention or removal of the 3-day weekend for 2008.
Per Human Resources, if a holiday falls on a Saturday, the legally observed holiday is on Friday; if on Sunday, the legally observed holiday is on Monday. Therefore, for the case of Veterans’ Day in 2007, the official holiday is on Sunday, and the legally observed holiday is on Monday; the library would be closed on both those days.
