Re: NEH Grant Submission

Date: November 2, 2005

Action needed: Approve submission of a “We the People” grant proposal to the National Endowment for the Humanties.

The RCPL grants committee has investigated an opportunity made available through the National Endowment for the Humanities.  As part of the ‘We the People’ Initiative, the NEH is requesting proposals for “public programs that encourage intergenerational learning about and reflection on significant topics of U.S. history and culture.”

The library would submit a proposal to develop a central online location for local Lakota oral histories and related documents.  Implementation of the project and the marketing of the final product will be developed to provide opportunities for intergenerational and intercultural learning at the library. The financial responsibilities would be requesting full funding and/or a combination of in-kind existing library resources as a match. There will not be an additional budgetary impact on library funding for short or long term.

The specific 2006 guidelines for implementation grants for humanities projects in libraries and archives will be published in late November.  The deadline for submitting proposals is likely to be in February of 2006.
