Re:             Satellite Site Fire station #7 Update

Discussions have been continuing internally originating from the 2012 proposal of combined library, Fire and Police services. Sites being discussed are the existing Fire Station on Haines and Anamosa Street in the lower level and the station’s new location out in Rapid Valley off Mall Drive.

On October 31, C. Ramirez and T. Davis met with Fire Chief Gary Shepherd and Building Inspector Brad Solon at Fire Station 7.  The purpose of the meeting was to evaluate the fire station’s lower level that opens to the outside for possible future use as a library satellite facility.

Overall, the space could be functional for a satellite library facility of approximately 700 square feet. Given its proximity to North Middle School, we could anticipate usage for after school from students along with early evenings and weekends from the community as a whole. Homework resources would be a primary focus along with a collection of popular books, magazines, and AV materials to serve the adjacent residential area.

Use of the space for a library facility would require some renovation, including modification to the 2nd exit, making the doorway ADA compliant, and remodeling the restroom.  In addition, windows would need to be cut into the concrete walls.

Parking on the site is tight but possible. We would have access to two regular and one ADA parking spaces.  However, according to Brad, these spaces would be sufficient per code for a facility of that size.

Zoning is being reviewed to determine if a library can operate in a shared fire station facility. Estimated remodeling costs will also be determined by the beginning of 2006, as a means of consideration into the 2007 Budget if this project is to continue to move forward.
