The memo
below is an update on the status of the OBOC program. The Board had requested
a follow up report based on the estimated funding costs. Originally, an
estimated cost range of $10,000 – $25,000 was anticipated. However, you will
find below we lucked out for 2006 with a total cost of $4,400 from a well
known mystery author Sue Grafton. The SDLA Annual Conference will also be in |

It became apparent in our contacts and research over the course of several months, authors of interest to our patrons, need contact made two years out. We found that most popular authors are working on a 12 – 18 month schedule of bookings. |

|
With that in mind, for the 2005 OBOC author, we are planning to highlight a work of classic literature. The classic literature of interest to the patrons appears to be authors that are no longer living. So the focus becomes multiple opportunities for community interactions. |

||||||||||||||
|
Classics are a good choice for One Book as they speak to everyone, transcending time and cultural differences. Since the Mayor endorses the program for the city, we are offering him a choice of three classic works: Frankenstein, Hound of the Baskervilles, and The Great Gatsby. Any one of these titles offers numerous opportunities for programming and community discussion. |

For 2006, Sue Grafton, a popular mystery author is interested has tentatively given confirmation as the One Book speaker. Her books are popular in the community, and we are working on firming up the details. |
