Re: Status update: Online Payments of Fines and Fees

Date: 11-21-05

Summary

While the Aleph integrated library system does not currently integrate with online payments, we will be able to start online payments via Verisign with a modified process requiring staff intervention.

Integration with Aleph

Aleph is not currently set up to accept online payments of fines and fees, however it appears that this functionality will be added in an upgrade projected for 2008. This may also require purchasing an additional module to implement. SDLN is working to get us more information on the upcoming online payment module, and its schedule for release.

We have often had success in implementing additional functionality in the system by working with other Aleph users. Additional functions can sometimes be added with scripts or modifications to available functions, but at this point we have had no response from other users.

In order to implement this without Aleph integration, Verisign will need to send the library the payment information so staff can enter the payment into the Aleph system.  While we expect the delay to be short, we do not know at this time what the delay would be, since we will need further information from both the City and Verisign.

Compliance with City Finance

The City is currently in the process of setting up the necessary accounts to facilitate credit card payments, probably via Verisign.

Parks and Rec takes online payments, but they are looking at a different sort of system than we are. They have an online form (via Active.com) that patrons can enter their information into. This information is then manually entered into a credit card processing machine.

Working with Verisign, rather than using the Parks and Rec system has several advantages. They will take care of processing the payments as well as the online security for patron’s private information. This will also not require us to add a credit card machine to the front desk, or to process credit card payments.
