Re:       ALA / WGBH grant opportunity

Summary:  Staff is recommending the Board’s approval to apply for an American Library Association grant.

Grant Description:  In celebration of the centennial of Einstein’s famous equation E=mc2, WGBH (Boston’s public television station) and ALA invite public libraries to apply to become one of 20 sites to show a new NOVA program airing this fall on PBS. Selected libraries will receive a $2500 stipend and a Library Resource Kit.  The application deadline is April 22.

Implementation:  Ideas for implementing the grant include:

  • Tie-in with existing ‘No School Days’ program series in Youth Services
  • Provide programs and events that deal with the proposed Homestake underground lab and neutrino research
  • Seek partnership with South Dakota School of Mines and Technology

Requirements:  Grant winners must agree to:

  • Send a representative to a workshop held in conjunction with ALA conference in Chicago on Friday, June 24.
  • Partner with community organizations to develop programs related to the theme
  • Host at least two events in the Fall of 2005, reaching a minimum of 100 participants
