Re:      Update to Loan Periods policy

Name of Policy:  Loan Periods and Fines and Fees

Reason for Policy: The purpose of the policy is to:

·         define the length of time for which library materials may be borrowed

·         outlines fines charged for overdue materials

·         outlines fees if materials are lost or damaged

Recommended change:  Currently, some new books are loaned for only one week. With the new ILS system, it is possible to set books to different loan periods based on their demand.

The change suggested is that all books be loaned for the standard 3 weeks, and that only materials in demand will check out for one week. Patrons would be informed at the time of check out what the loan period is.

This change will have several advantages:

  • Patrons will be able to check out low-demand new books for three weeks.
  • Both old and new items that are in-demand will automatically change to a one-week check-out period, ensuring patrons receive materials quickly.
  • The status change of the material will not change the due date of an item already on loan, but will take effect with the next check-out.
