BOARD OF TRUSTEES

 

ADMINISTRATION

 

Community, Governmental and Interlibrary Relations:  Greta presented the SDLA Legislative Platform at the Mayor’s annual Legislator’s Breakfast and provided a library update on the KNBN Library slot the 2nd Wed. of each month, 6:40 a.m.

 

Building & Grounds: Continued updating information for building maintenance for expansion. Training began on Nov 17th with Johnson Controls for general and preventative maintenance, this continues as a weekly event. A facilities equipment maintenance log has also been developed to monitor ongoing needs and costs. A bid has been accepted for carpet replacement with the anticipated completion date of March 2004. Reviewing applications for the part-time custodial worker position. 

 

Public Information and Programming:

Ø       Signage and Displays – Planning survey information; Author Barb Yirka; Circ. exit door; replacement emergency signs, computer signs in YS; garage signs; new behavior signs upstairs; replaced worn copyright and magazine signs; Fine Forgiveness signs and banners; SCORE; City Benefits Fair sign; Christmas and New Year’s closing signs; large signs for Chess and Story Times; carpet floor maps updated; emergency flip charts updated;

Training: Twenty-two city and county employees attended the second Information Advantage computer class given by the library on December 12. Terri Davis was the instructor for this class on Microsoft Outlook. Jean Frankenfeld, training coordinator, attended a Fred Pryor seminar on “How to Balance Priorities and Manage Multiple Projects” on December 1. Kim Baumberger and Jean Frankenfeld attended a training session on DreamWeaver MX Level 3 on December 17.

 

Circulation staff completed their third session of Readers’ Advisory training, in preparation for offering this expanded service to the public.

 

Technical Services provided training to selectors on new procedures in order items through Ingram’s ipage.  The TS staff began training in the use of Aleph acquisitions.

 

PUBLIC SERVICES/YOUTH

 

Programs:  Thirty patrons participated in “Donuts with Dads”, an annual youth services program that encourages family story time and activities.  This year’s program was presented by Leanna Martinez and included creating a milk bath gift for their caregiver or parent.   

 

YuGiOh card group was added as an after-school program.  This group plays an interactive card gaming for experienced players every Monday after school.  The after-school chess group and card playing activity round out the after-school programming.  The TAG group met to discuss developing a poetry/writing/ illustrating focus for this group. 

           

Services:  The staff provided an Information Literacy tour for 10 young girls from Girls Inc.  The group learned about the library resources with a scavenger hunt developed by Linda Rogers.

 

The Home Work Helper workstation was used for thirty-six hours during December.  Many of the users have used the Word Processing and Internet for their projects.

                       

Collections:  The youth services staff evaluated the reference collection for print and non-print resources.  The collection will be moved in January to develop the Home Work Helper workstations as an all-inclusive research area for youth. 

 

PUBLIC SERVICES/ADULT SERVICES-REFERENCE

 

Programs:  Reference facilitated two programs for a total of 17 people in December. On December 11th Jean Frankenfeld, Roxann Silbaugh and Aimee Hepler presented to the Chamber’s Learning Lunch group; on the 13th   romance author Barbara Yirka spoke. This event was part of the Author! Author! series which will run through spring 2004.

 

Services:  Reference proctored 11 tests in December. The staff is working on learning the new live chat system which is slated to open to the public in January. Final preparations and marketing issues are being completed.

 

Collections:  The reference collection was thoroughly reviewed in December. Material was looked at critically for use and for more current editions of material deemed essential for the collection. Duplicated and dated materials were weeded in order for the collection to be dynamic and effective.

 

PUBLIC SERVICES/CIRCULATION

 

Services: 

  • Completed the shift in adult fiction N-Z to allow some growth in this area of the collection.
  • Planned shift for adult fiction A-M to allow moderate growth.
  • Completed a two-week fine forgiveness event benefiting the Black Hills Food Bank and the Humane Society.

·         Recruited and tested four volunteers to test webpage usability

·         Negotiated with SDLN and Ex Libris on outstanding issues for migration to Aleph
