Re: Executive Summary Public Library Voluntary Standards RFP
Pam Lingor and Cathy Enlow
are to be recognized and thanked for the completion of the RFP. For the work on
their behalf along with other participates in the RFP, I will be appointing a
workgroup from interested members of the Public Library Section to move forward
the next part of the process with the completion of RFP. The workgroup will analysis
the data to distribute information statewide and develop an annual assessment
process in collaboration with the State Library.
The purpose of the RFP was to
gather data for the development of an assessment process for the SD Public
Libraries eligibility to meet the voluntary standards. Research was conducted
based upon key components of the standards within the State Library Annual
Report. The RFP assessed data regarding:
The next steps from the RFP
data collected to consider for the group’s work (may need to be one to two year
goals):
§ Post the RFP data on the SDLA website for presentation
at the 2007 Conference Section meeting (gc is
completing the posting)
§ Analysis the data to determine levels of support needed
by libraries to meet the standards. Document the levels in a matrix for
tracking annually changes in applications and acceptance. Provide the matrix to
the State Library for proposed ongoing maintenance and reporting.
§ Update the existing application form to include a
checklist for the library certification
§ Update the library and librarian forms for online
application
§ Identify an annual Honor Roll for those that have
successfully completed certification and/or accreditation standards for
recognition at the annual conference section meeting
§ Develop a certificate template for any SDLA and State
Library continuing education events as a record and reminder to apply
§ Continue to work with the State Library for revisions
to the annual report for gathering data related to the certification and
accreditation standards
§ Develop and implement a marketing plan for trustees to
raise awareness and understanding of the standards
§ Design SDLA and State Library continuing education to
meet requirements of the standards coordinated through the SDLA Programming
Committee and the State Library Development Officer
Work has already started for
the support data of the SD Public
Libraries: a public agenda with the information noted below of community
dialogues. Additional updates and
information will be shared as events are scheduled.
Universal Access: SD Public Libraries: a public agenda
Purpose -
coming out of the State Library study are some unresolved issues that relate to
universal access of people having access and access to the services they need.
Discussion is needed to recreate a system that addresses both of these needs.
Audience -
people involved in and with libraries - librarians, trustees, users, public
officials from surrounding areas within 100 mile radius
Timing - big
picture: new mechanisms and possible legislation emerging out of these
discussions in 2008 and/or 2009
Initial Locations - Lawrence County Listening Session then Ft. Pierre Panel Discussion to
kick-off a series of community dialogues. Panel discussion to
include the Governor.
